THÈME 2018 : LE SPECTRE DE L’ANORMAL
Au croisement du biologique, de l’humain et du technologique, les sciences « psy » ne se contentent pas d’étudier des faits pour en tirer des lois, mais sont aussi confrontées aux normes, multiples et parfois contradictoires, qui gouvernent la vie de l’esprit. Cette dimension axiologique est non seulement au cœur de la quête de connaissance qui caractérise les sciences « psy » (notamment dans les tentatives pour répertorier et classer les troubles mentaux, ou pour identifier les critères du fonctionnement normal de l’intelligence), mais aussi dans leur volonté de rendre compte des illusions psychologiques (en mettant par exemple au jour les mécanismes expliquant la croyance dans le « merveilleux » psychique ou les phénomènes paranormaux), voire même dans leur ambition prométhéenne pour optimiser les pouvoirs et la capacités de la pensée (comme y aspire le mouvement transhumaniste ou les divers projets d’amélioration de l’espèce humaine).
Pour saisir, dans toute son étendue, le spectre de l’anormal tel qu’il a été conceptualisé et opérationnalisé par les sciences « psy », la 3e édition de l’Atelier « Psy-ences » réunira donc des spécialistes venus d’horizons disciplinaires variés (anthropologues, historiens, sociologiques, psychologues, philosophes) qui nous aideront à mieux comprendre, entre autres, les différentes manières de concevoir la distinction du normal et du pathologique, de donner un sens aux croyances religieuses sans appel à une quelconque transcendance, ou encore d’imaginer les futurs possibles de la psyché humaine.
2018 THEME : « THE(AB)NORMAL SPECTRUM »
At the intersection of biology, humanity and technology, the « psy » sciences not only study facts to establish scientific laws; they are also confronted with the numerous—and sometimes contradictory—norms that govern the life of the mind. This axiological dimension is central in the quest for knowledge that characterizes the « psy » sciences (especially in attempts to catalogue and classify mental disorders, or to identify the criteria for the normal functioning of intelligence). But this axiological dimension is also paramount in the desire to make sense of psychological illusions (e.g., by revealing the mechanisms which might explain the belief in « marvellous » psychic or paranormal phenomena), or indeed in the Promethean ambition to optimize the powers and capacities of thought (as the transhumanist movement and the various projects for improving the human species aspire to do).
To grasp the spectrum of the abnormal in its full range as it has been conceptualized and operationalized by the « psy » sciences, this 3rd edition of the « Psy-ences » workshop will bring together specialists from different backgrounds and various disciplines (anthropologists, historians, sociologists, psychologists, philosophers). We hope that these discussions will help us better understand the different ways of conceiving the distinction between normal and pathological, to give meaning to religious beliefs without resorting to transcendent explanations, and to imagine the possible futures of the human psyche.
