Small aggregates of plasmonic nanoparticle are known to sustain large surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signals due to coupling of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) induced by the excitation radiation. We have synthesized plasmonic nanoclusters encapsulated in silica shells dopped with a variety of Raman reporter molecules as an alternative optical label to fluorophores for sensing and imaging applications. Experimental measurements and theoretical calculations have shown the intricate dependency of LSPR on the geometrical arrangement of nanoparticle structures but few have the relative electric field strength at the various electromagnetic hot-sites. In this presentation, I will discuss our recent work on the study of electric field variations at the junction hot sites in plasmonic nanoculsters both by spectroscopic measurement and electromagnetic calculations. Specifically, I will discuss the influence of nanocluster geometry on the local field strength in the nanocluster junction hot-site
